My Dad and I used to have this tradition each year in which we would go to Toronto the week before Chinese New Year (CNY) and shop for decorations, food and treats in preparation for the big festivities. This tradition was put on hold when I went away to university because my school schedule was always too busy to make the trip. It never occurred to me that my dad saw this as a tradition until this weekend when he told me in the car that he recently bragged to his friends about how I wanted to hang out with him and that evidence of this was our 'yearly father-daughter tradition' which was temporarily derailed because of university. It was then, that I realized that this trip he made to see me this weekend was an effort to get back on track! So we did a lot on Saturday - we shopped around in Chinatown, ate out our favorite noodle house in Etobicoke, went to Temple in Markham, shopped again in Pacific Mall and Market Village and then got something to eat in Scarborough. It was certainly a very carefree and fun-filled day.

This is my dad's favorite noodle house, which specializes in our favorite Vietnamese noodle soup:
Bún bò Huế.

Bún bò Huế is rice vermicelli soup with a predominant flavor of lemongrass and a spicy beef broth. In our case, it was incredibly spicy. We were sniffling and coughing throughout the entire meal but it was still so enjoyable. I feel that I can't give it a fair rating because the results of my food experience may be skewed from external factors [such as having good company :)]
so cute.
